Methodology

Pure unit conversion: total = plot area (converted to m²) × rate (converted to a per-m² basis). Uses exact area-unit conversion factors (1 hectare = 10,000 m², 1 acre = 4,046.86 m²) rather than rounded approximations.

This calculator deliberately doesn’t suggest an application rate — that number should come from a soil test recommendation or the amendment’s own product label, since the right rate depends on your specific soil, the amendment’s nutrient content, and what you’re growing. What it solves is the conversion step: rates are usually published per hectare or per acre, but plots are measured in whatever unit is convenient on-site.

The unit-mismatch mistake this catches

A common error is applying a "per acre" rate directly to a plot measured in square metres, or vice versa — acres and hectares differ by roughly 2.47x, so a rate mismatch either wastes amendment at massive expense or under-applies enough to make no real difference.

Buying the right amount

Once you have the total quantity needed, check it against how your amendment is sold (by the bag, by weight, by volume) to work out how many units to actually buy — this calculator gives you the target weight; matching it to package sizes is the last step.

Where do I get my application rate from?

From a soil test result (a lab will typically recommend a specific rate for your soil’s deficiencies) or from the amendment product’s own label instructions — never guess a rate, since over-application can damage soil chemistry or waste money, and under-application won’t fix the underlying issue.

How many square metres are in an acre or hectare?

One hectare is 10,000 square metres. One acre is about 4,046.86 square metres (roughly 0.405 hectares) — the exact figures this calculator uses internally.

What if my amendment is sold in bags of a specific weight?

Divide the total quantity this calculator gives you by the bag weight to get the number of bags needed, rounding up to the nearest whole bag.

Does this work for both organic and synthetic amendments?

Yes — the calculation is purely about area and rate conversion, so it applies the same way whether you’re applying compost, lime, a synthetic fertilizer blend, or any other amendment sold with a per-area rate.
