Why does my stocking density depend on filtration, not just tank size?
Fish waste (ammonia) needs to be processed by beneficial bacteria (in a biofilter) or removed by water exchange — more fish means more waste, and a tank’s safe capacity is really limited by how fast that waste can be processed, not just by physical swimming space.
How do I know if my system is overstocked?
Test water quality directly — elevated ammonia or nitrite, fish gasping at the surface (low dissolved oxygen), or slowed growth are all signs of overstocking relative to your system’s actual filtration/aeration capacity.
Should I stock at maximum density from day one?

Does fish species change safe stocking density?
