Methodology

Exact frustum (truncated pyramid) volume: V = (h÷3) × (A₁ + A₂ + √(A₁×A₂)), where A₁ is surface area, A₂ is bottom area (surface dimensions minus 2×depth×slope ratio on each side), and h is depth — the mathematically correct volume for a sloped-sided excavation, not an approximation.

Why pond volume needs real geometry, not a shortcut

A pond isn’t a rectangular box

Multiplying surface length x width x depth overstates volume, sometimes significantly, because a pond’s banks slope inward toward the bottom — the bottom is smaller than the surface. This calculator instead treats the pond as a frustum (a truncated pyramid), the correct shape for a sloped-bank excavation, and computes its exact volume rather than applying a rough correction factor.

Why bank slope is a real design decision, not just an input

Steeper banks (closer to 1:1) hold more water for the same surface footprint but are less stable and more prone to erosion or slumping, especially in loose soil. Gentler banks (3:1 or beyond) are safer and more stable long-term but need a larger surface area to hold the same volume — the same trade-off logic as the terrace riser choice above.

When the bottom disappears entirely

On a small or deep pond with a steep bank slope, the bottom dimensions can shrink to zero — the pond becomes cone/pyramid-shaped rather than having a flat bottom at all. This calculator handles that automatically since the frustum formula correctly reduces to a standard pyramid volume in that case, rather than producing a nonsensical negative bottom area.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my pond’s volume less than length x width x depth?

Because that simple formula assumes vertical walls (a rectangular box), which real ponds don’t have. A sloped-bank pond’s true volume is always less than the box calculation, since the sides taper inward toward the bottom.

What bank slope should I use for a farm pond?

A moderate 2:1 (horizontal:vertical) slope is a common default for stable earthen pond banks in reasonably cohesive soil. Sandier or looser soils are safer with a gentler 3:1 slope; a 1:1 slope generally needs stone facing or another retaining method to stay stable.

Does this account for water lost to evaporation or seepage?

No — this calculates the pond’s physical storage capacity from its shape alone. Actual water level over time depends on rainfall, inflow, evaporation, and soil seepage rate, which vary by site and season.
